Halloween can be a real treat. The trick is to make sure Halloween is both fun and safe!

Please follow local safety regulations, but if you are going out this year, here are a few tips on how to stay safe even when it’s a dark and stormy night with ghosts and goblins everywhere.

Before you head out, set some ground rules. If your child will be trick-or-treating without you, plan a familiar route and set a curfew. Review safety rules, including staying with the group, walking only on the sidewalk, approaching only clearly lit homes, and never going inside a home or car for a treat.


  • Be sure your children’s masks fit securely and don’t obstruct their vision.
  • Read the labels on all products that you buy.  Choose make-up or face paint that is chemical free.  Here is one of my favorites.
  • With costumes, the brighter the better. Choose bright colors and flame-retardant materials. You can even use caution tape as needed.
  • Sturdy shoes are important. Even for little princesses, mom’s high heels aren’t a good idea.
  • Never leave candle lit pumpkins unattended.
  • Be sure the swords, and other costume accessories are soft and flexible.
  • Remind children to not eat candy and treats until it has been inspected at home.  
  • Feed children healthy dinners so they’ll be less likely to eat while walking
  • Make sure an adult accompanies children.
  • Walk, don’t run.
  • Don’t dart into streets; cross streets only at intersections and crosswalks.
  • Never enter a stranger’s home or car.
  • Only go to homes where a porch light is on.
  • Avoid houses where you see or hear barking or aggressive dogs.


Make sure your house is safe for children:

  • Remove obstacles from sidewalks and paths such as hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
  • Use candles with care. Place candle lit pumpkins on a sturdy surface away from curtains and other flammable objects or use a battery powered candle.
  • Keep candle lit pumpkins away from where kids can get to them.
  • Replace and burned out lights
  • Keep dogs away from the door and other places where people will gather.
  • Think about handing out healthier treats as able.
