How to safely travel with the family right now…
Are you planning to travel? Many of my patients are getting the itch to travel but have questions about how to safely do this.
There is no magical pill that will guarantee that you won’t get sick, but there are some fundamentals to think about that will increase your chances of a fun and healthy holiday.
FOCUS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OR SEEDS OF HEALTH
My first tip is to focus on your family’s foundations. While this is always important, it is even more important when you travel because it is so easy to let things slide. At least 1 week before you travel, ensure your family is dialed in.
Focus on the SEEDS:
- Environment and Toxins
I have talked about the SEEDS of health many times and won’t do a deep dive here. You can check out much more in-depth discussion in our Online Wellness Kit.
I would say, most importantly from the SEEDS, focus on trying to minimize stress. Stress can severely and acutely increase around the time of travel and during your adventure. Try to keep stress to a minimum.
You know yourself best, so think hard about what makes you most stressed about your travel plans. Do you need things planned? Then, get planning now. Will you be scrambling to get bags packed a few hours before your flight? Get ahead. Find ways to decrease your stress so you don’t over-tax your immune system.
Also, remember to eat healthy. Get in as many veggies and fruits before you go. You may not eat the healthiest while you are away so store up those vitamins. (Who me? Not me?? Never haha)
Load up on those nutrients before you go. Don’t compound the problem with an unhealthy diet the week before and then hit up the buffet for 7 days straight. Your gut will not be happy with you and your body will be focused on digesting all that crap versus fighting off the infection that comes your way.
Are you excited? Are your kids excited? Don’t let things slide the day before you travel. It is going to be crazy enough with the time change (if there is one). Especially if you have a long flight, make sure you go to bed extra early the night before you leave.
I love to load up on immune support before I go and while I am away. Make sure to consult your provider for what is right for you.
Some of my favorites include:
I like to load up on supplements 5 days before I go and daily while away.
WHAT MEDICATIONS SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
I always bring with me a few things for long travel. Most places have these so it really isn’t a big deal if you pack it or not but I don’t want to have to find a store when I need these.
I usually bring with me:
- Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen
- An Antihistamine like Benadryl
- Activated Charcoal
SHOULD I SPRAY EVERYTHING DOWN I TOUCH IN AN AIRPORT?
Well that is really up to you. You can wipe and spray as much as you feel comfortable. Studies have shown that the most concerning area for infection on planes is the seatbelt and tray table so if you are going to spray something down, that would be a good start.
Of course, follow all local safety measures, wash hands, avoid touching eyes and mouth and spray with sanitizer if touching dirty areas as appropriate.
Wishing you a safe and happy travel.
