What to look for in a formula?

One of the most common questions I get from parents who choose to feed their children with formula is which brand(s) I like best. As a Pediatrician, we always aim to encourage breastfeeding where possible, but there are many situations where a parent cannot breastfeed or chooses not to breastfeed and so we always want to discuss which product may be best for their family.

There are many factors to consider including what type of milk the formula contains and what nutrients, vitamins and chemicals are added to the formula.

What ingredients to look for in a formula?

The protein: If your child is not sensitive to cow’s milk dairy, look for grass-fed A2 Organic Whole Milk – A2 beta-casein proteins (also the type in human milk). They are found to be easier to digest than A1 proteins in most cow’s milk formulas.

Fatty Acids – A variety of quality fat sources promote optimal cellular function.

Organic Lactose – carbohydrate naturally found in breast milk which provides energy for your child.

Prebiotics – Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs), Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) & Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) from Inulin are essential nutrients found in breast milk that support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

DHA & ARA Fats: Key for brain & eye development, and not extracted with hexane, a neurotoxin.

5 Nucleotides – Non-protein compounds that play a key role in promoting a healthy immune system, including metabolism and blood flow.

Great vitamin source – Easy nutrients for the body to absorb, such as the methylcobalamin form of vitamin B12 and L-methylfolate rather than synthetic folic acid.

You also want to avoid the junk that causes inflammation in our children.

NO corn syrup, brown rice syrup, or maltodextrin

NO industrial seed oils

NO grains or soy

NO synthetic folic acid

Serenity Kids’ A2 Whole Milk Toddler Formula contains all of these ingredients and more without any of the junk which is why I love them.

A little note about the environmental impact:

We need to not only think about the impact of the product we are purchasing on ourselves, but also the environmental impact of that product on our planet.

Serenity Kids sources organic grass fed A2 whole milk from Alexandre Family Farm. At Alexandre farm is a regenerative farm and puts the planet first. Their Eco-Dairy seal specifically refers to their commitments to animal feeding & health practices, animal genetics, holistic regenerative farming, and sustainability practices.
